Solar charge controllers are used in virtually all solar power systems that incorporate batteries. Because overcharging batteries can reduce battery life or damage them so badly they become unusable, the charge controller regulates the power going from the solar panels to the batteries. Today’s advanced charge controllers actually extend battery life, reduce charging time and more fully charge the batteries for better system efficiency. Charge controllers also prevent reverse current flow which could drain the batteries to the solar panels when they aren’t producing electricity.
